Note:

  • (1) Argo Navis is an archaic constellation. In modern usage Argo is divided into Carina, Puppis, and Vela. Some include Pyxis in this constellation.

  • (2) "Australis" is sometimes used, in both nominative and genitive.

  • (3) Serpens is a long winding constellation. It may be divided into Serpens Caput and Serpens Cauda on some charts.

  • (4) The Magellanic clouds are often treated as "pseudo-constellations" and abbreviated as such.

  • (5) Constellations with abbreviations in grey are not visible from South Africa
