Editorial How many of you saw the alignment of Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and the young sickle Moon earlier on in April? Unfortunately, my neighbour has a small grove of Eucalyptus Trees planted in such a way that it blocks my view of the Northwestern horizon. So what started out as a potentially interesting view, actually disappeared by the time it was dark enough to see the entire grouping. If any of you managed to get a photo or two of the event, please forward it to me with a few lines and Ill place it in the next issue of your magazine. And talking of Canopus, how did you like the slightly changed format? It actually had an impressive effect on our normal production and postage costs they were literally halved. This will definitely have a positive effect on the societys finances and the benefactors at the end of the day are You our members. If any of you out there have more ideas on how we can further cut costs, please let your committee know well follow up on all ideas. Also, if any of you have ideas on how to improve the content and layout of your magazine, please let us know. All suggestions will be investigated and implemented if feasible. Canopus is a little smaller than normal this month as we have received very little in the way of articles. However, your editor has managed to glean some interesting articles from the Astronomical press and has included them for your edification and enjoyment. Danie revisits Ex Hydrae which has become the subject of an observing campaign where amateurs can supply valuable input to the Variable Star observing establishment. Melvyn has discovered a few more "scientific" words of wisdom from kids and youll find some of them herein. Did you know that there was a connection between Astronomy and Medicine? Read Brians short piece on the subject, supplied together with his monthly "state of the heavens" tables. ( By the way, do any of you know how to get rid of Gum trees without leaving any evidence??? ) |
