Shows, courses, conferences and general events of interest in 2000.

Hot of the press ……… a tentative list of shows and courses (to be confirmed by the Johannesburg Planetarium Director Dr Claire Flanagan – see our next Canopus for updated details), throughout 2000.

This information is provided to create more awareness through you the ASSA members with families, friends and colleagues of the many interesting shows, courses, events, conferences, seminars etc throughout the year at the Johannesburg Planetarium and in and around RSA and elsewhere.

Planetarium shows (to be confirmed):

  • The Summer Skies.
  • Astronomical "Oscars".
  • Meeting of the giants (planetary alignment).
  • SETI (Search for Extra-terrestial Intelligence).
  • Backyard Astronomy.
  • Space exploration.
  • "15 billion years in one hour!" - Big Bang to now……..
  • The star of Bethlehem.

Courses at the Planetarium (to be confirmed):

  • Beginners Astronomy course run by Lance Kinnear.
  • Other course(s) which may complement the 1 year non-degree course on Astronomy offered by UNISA.

Keep your eyes open for these and other events, conferences and seminars of note (monthly updates will be provided throughout 2000):

  • International Conference on "microlensing" in February in Cape Town. Check the SAAO website for more info.
  • The annual Messier Marathon (An astronomical type of "birdwatching" event)
  • "Origin of Man" Conference 25/26 March.
  • Planetary alignment 5 May.
  • "Open day" at WITS University early in May.
