Pictures of lunar eclipse

Dear Mr. Overbeek,

The total lunar eclipse of Sept. 16, 1997 could be seen very well here in Germany. We got nice pictures showing both the eclipsed moon *and* many field stars around taken on 6x6 cm^2 film with 1:5.6/f=500 mm optics. Besides the aesthetical charm the aim was to determine the parallax of the Moon for educational purposes. To do this we need at least one other photograph taken at a large distance from our site. With partners in Germany we get a displacement of about 1/7 moon diameter. We would be pleased if we could get pictures taken in South Africa on which the displacement would acculmulate to about three lunar diameters. In addition due to the similar geographical longitude the effect is mainly in declination if the photographs are taken at about the same time.

You will understand the purpose of this mail to you. We are looking for people in Southern Africa who took such photographs. Such a simple way of determining the distance of the moon would be of high didactical value for schools, planetariums, and other public activities. By these means it is possible to demonstrate to the public that trigonometry also works oustide the Earth. Especially the Moon as our nearest natural celestial object is of outstanding interest herein.

If we can gather an appropriate pair of photographs they would contribute to an article in the German magazine "Sterne und Weltraum".

We would be very grateful if you could help us in finding such pictures. Unfortunately your photograph on the SAAO's homepage doesn't show any stars, but perhaps you have others or know of them.

With best wishes, sincerely yours,
