ASSA JHB

Editorial

We will probably not be producing a copy of Canopus for January as our usual printing and mailing time clashes with the Christmas holidays and we expect our contributors are going to have a break too. At the time of writing we don’t have details of the January meeting, except to tell you that it will be on the 14th Jan 1998. So...see you there.

The latest news concerning the observatory site is that AS&TS have decided, for the time being, not to sell the property.

They do however have plans to possibly use the site for education purposes, and this would encompass astronomy as well as the usual sciences. If this comes about we may well assist in some way with running astronomy education of some sort. There is also the possibility that some of the buildings will be declared National Monuments - which will provide some protection for the buildings as well as some restrictions and responsibilities for the owners.

This is not to say that the property will not be sold at a later time. We should not get complacent about the arrangement and the committee would welcome suggestions as to what we should be doing about the situation.
