TELESCOPE MAKING CLASS
The 96/97 class is winding down. Thus far, only one complete instrument has emerged from this class. However, there are several heroic figures still battling on and I fully expect to see a number of nice instruments completed.
For the next class, we have secured a much more appropriate venue. Parktown Boys' High School (corner Jan Smuts & Empire, Jhb) have kindly made their Technology Centre available to us, and some of their pupils will join the class. This venue boasts classroom facilities, as well as both woodworking and metalworking shops. Access to these facilities will at the very least make life easier for some, but for most it will make the difference between "CAN DO" and "MISSION IMPOSSIBLE". Naturally, basic courtesy dictates that we be on our best behaviour, and we are obliged to observe the rules relating to safety and security.
The 97/98 class is currently scheduled to start on the first
weekend of October. At the moment, we cannot set out the costs,
as we are still obtaining prices for the grinding materials and,
as usual, having some difficulty obtaining glass at anything like
a sensible
price. In order to be able to give the individual attention
needed to make the difference between dropping out and completing
a telescope, we wish to limit the size of the class. We will keep
a waiting list and, as things progress, may allow subsequent
"batches" to start once the first batch is up to speed.
Please remember that the class is open to members of the
Johannesburg Centre of ASSA, and pupils of the school.
"Outsiders" are welcome to come and observe the
proceedings but, should they wish to participate, we would like
them to join the Centre.
To book a place on the class, please contact Evan Dembskey. Remember that building a telescope is not a trivial task: it requires concerted dedication. But, if you are willing to listen to instruction and prepared to put in the effort, we can provide the know-how. Join us: it's a lot of fun, we keep things informal, and we would like to see you among the ranks of the telescope making fraternity!
